Wool Cotton for rainy days

HPIM6725.JPG

The camera is back in the old home, together with a tired but happy teenager. It feels good to have them both home. And it means that I’m back to more regular postings again.

I had plans for a top in cotton, but changed my mind in tune with the weather forecasts. It’s raining, and thus enabling me to start a project not suited for heat. The yarn is Rowan Wool Cotton in the colour way Gipsy (which is much redder than my pictures show it. Did I say it’s raining? ). And the model is Ali from Kim Hargreaves’ spring collection. I like the texture of the basket weave pattern a lot, and I like the shawl collar very much. What I don’t like in the model is the high garter stitched part at the beginning of the body. I’m thinking about changing part of itto baket weave and only knit a shorter part in garter stitch, more like the sleeves. That will call for moving part of the decreases to the sides, but I don't think it will be a problem. What do you think?

Since I couldn’t decide on how to knit the body, was a sleeve a good starting point. They are ¾ long, a length I like a lot. The yarn is nice to knit with, but the pattern not at all as mindless as I had thought. It’s super easy, but you have to be very alert on how many stitches you purl and how many you knit, making it a less suitable TV knit than I had expected. I am, as you can see, working at the sleeve cap already.

You chose a beautiful color in that yarn. Ali is going to look very smashing in it!

Your alteration of the Ali pattern sounds good-- I think the garter section as is looks a little strange, and reducing that part would make the design look more classic. I would definitely make the same adjustment, if I was knitting this too!

I like patterns that have waistbands with a longer garter stitch but it seems like if the waistband is going to be longer than the sleeve cuffs would be, too. I think that is what makes it look a little off balance so shortening the waistband or lengthening the cuffs would make it look better. Beautiful yarn! Can't wait to see it on its way to completion.

Kim Hargreaves is very fond of this type of waistbands. I have knitted one, and I know it's not a suitable model for me. The waistband is 50 rows high, and the cuffs 20, so more than double. The yarn is lovely, and one my not-so-fond-of-wool husband has given his tumbs up for!

Congrats to you as well on completing the family sock challenge!
